Researchers from the CEA laboratory of cancer biology and infection, Inserm, CNRS, and three universities (Joseph-Fourier, Aix-Marseille, and Claude Bernard Lyon 1) have revealed the crucial role of the protein kinase CK2 in epithelial cell plasticity, particularly in cancer pathologies. Indeed, an alteration of this protein’s activity can result in significant modifications, where epithelial cells are transformed into more mobile cancer cells – this change is therefore a source of metastases. This work, published online May 7 by the journal Oncogene, has revealed a new role for this multi-functional protein kinase in the progression of breast tumors in women.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
